A quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson

  • by

The other day I came across this quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson:

Make your own bible. Select and collect all the words and sentences that in all your readings have been to you like the blast of a trumpet.

I’ve been doing that for as long as I can remember, decades before I came across this quote.

My problem is that usually, all these things have been written on small pieces of paper. They are nigh impossible to keep track of.

Yes, I’ve tried keeping notebooks instead of writing things down on random pieces of paper. It never lasts long.

Before we moved I was diligently trying to get as many of the random pieces of paper digitized. I would either type it into my computer inside a document, or I’d scan it in as a PDF file. I’d then toss away the piece of paper, thus, hopefully, cleaning up my desk and workspace. I’m not sure how successful I was as I still have many, many piees of paper with notes on them.

It’d be nice if they were more organized, so I could find things when I needed them. Or, assemble them into my own book of wisdom as suggested by Ralph Waldo.

I came across something that might be a path toward that goal. But that is for another time.
