Winter is coming

  • by

So, we’re in the Autumn season and as was stated so many times in Game Of Thrones “Winter is coming.”

As far as I’m concerned, winter is already here. It was 34 deg F (1.11 deg C) this morning when I walked the dogs. That’s winter weather in Texas. It’s fortunate that there was no wind blowing today. Two days ago, it was 44 deg F (6.67 deg C) while I was walking the dogs but there was a 13 mph (20 kph) blowing. That felt so much colder than this morning. The wonders of wind chill factor, ladies and gentlemen! We’ve had quite a lot of wind recently. I’m hoping it isn’t going to be this windy all winter.

It’s only October and we’re already getting ‘winter weather’. That’s why when I was in Houston I always said I lived south of Dallas for a reason. Normally I didn’t experience cold weather like this until the beginning of December at the earliest. Most of the time it wasn’t until later in December or early January until things get this cold.

I vaguely remember being in Midland, Texas when I was very young, like four years old, and there was snow on the ground. So, I suppose if I’d grown up there I would be used to it by now.

Now, we’re living north of Dallas. This is going to be my first real experience with winter and snow and wind. Yes, we got snow in Houston, every couple of years. I think we had snow in New Orleans once. But that was like half an inch of snow. And it was usually gone within 24 hours. Things come to a grinding halt in Houston when there’s half an inch of snow on the ground. No one (other than transplanted Yankees) knows how to deal with the snow. The local authorities tell everyone to stay inside and not go out unless you have to. No, up here it will be extended bouts of snow, lasting several days (if not weeks) and more than half an inch. It might be a foot or two. Definitely more than I want to deal with.

The other thing is I don’t know how to drive in snow. The locals tell me that if it snows, just stay home and don’t go out on the roads. Sounds like good advice to me. But I know there will come a situation where I’m going to need to go out and drive in the snow. Be it needing to get groceries in the case of extended snow on the ground, or having to get the wife to an appointment, or even the emergency room, I’m sure I’m going to have to do it. I wonder if the local police department has a ‘how to drive in snow’ class?

I am not looking forward to this. I don’t like cold to begin with. I’m not going to like being snowed in. I’m certainly not walking the dogs if there is snow on the ground.

On the whole, I think my best course of action is to just hibernate through the winter. I’ll go get bundled up under the covers in my bed when it starts getting real wintery, like November 1. Maybe I’ll let all the dogs sleep on the bed so they can keep me warm under a puppy pile. Then, someone can wake me up when the weather gets less arctic, like around the beginning of April. I think it will work out better for everybody concerned that way.

What about you, my Hordeling? Do you do better in summer or winter? Leave a comment and let me know.
