What fresh new Hell is this?

  • by

So, over the weekend we had some nice weather, temperature around 55 deg F (12 deg C), sunny, mostly gentle winds. Good kite flying weather.

Then, overnight, the temperature plummeted to 20 deg F (-6 deg C)! What. The. Fireball?

There was a bit of icing overnight so the ground was sprinkled with white patches. And wind! We went from nice gentle, kite-flying wind to howling, ready-to-kick-your-ass wind.

It was at the point that I was certainly not going to go out to walk the dogs this morning. I let them out into the backyard to go do their business. The last thing I need is for Magdalena trying to bolt while we’re on a patch of ice, causing me to fall and break a leg. She nearly did that over the weekend during the good weather. She decided to go all-out and drag me behind her. I almost didn’t get her stopped before she got to full speed. As it was, I was nearly squatting on the ground pulling her back. That won’t work on ice. (She’d definitely make a good sled dog aside from not being able to steer her or get her to stop.)

The dogs seemed fine with the ice on the ground, and didn’t even mind the wind. They kept going in and out all day.

As the sun came up most of the ice melted off, but we still had strong winds. Then the afternoon rolled around and we got hit with a second blast of snow. Take a look:

I have to hope all the rabbits, groundhogs, deer, all the stray cats around our friend’s house, and other animals in the area are able to find some place to stay warm and out of the worst of this.

Normally, we might see weather like this in Houston every couple of years. It might happen once during the whole Winter season. But never as early as November. Normally at this point we’d be back in Houston, but now that we’re permanently in the new house, that’s not going to happen anymore.

This is just the beginning of this type of weather. It will continue like this over the next several months. I’m just going to have to resolve myself to this new reality and make the best of it. Unfortunately I can’t hibernate until next April. Nor can I spend my days under a pile of blankets with a nice cup of hot chocolate and a stack of books. I’ll see what I can do to get as much of both of those activities in as a counter-measure to this weather, but I don’t see it happening often.

On a positive note, I got some more work done on the supernatural soap opera.

I hope the weather is nice where you are, my Hordeling.
