It was early morning. I put Sirocco in his harness and left for our walk.
The sun had just peeked over the horizon a few minutes earlier. The air was cool, very little wind blowing. A pleasant morning, weather-wise, for the first time in a while. The world was fairly quiet at this time of day. The traffic around town hasn’t really picked up yet. Only a few cars were on the road.
We headed up the road until we got to the barb-wire fence, which is there to keep the cows in when they are grazing. The cows haven’t been in this pasture for the last several months and the gate is open. This is the same pasture that Houdini was in love with because he could run into it and roll in all the cowpies.
When we got to the fence we made a turn and go a little ways further before we turn around to head back home.
Sirocco stopped and stared off into the distance. Before I could tun my head to see what he was looking at, I heard the sound. Something galloping toward me.
I looked up to see a pair of young deer running towards me, a doe and a buck. I was surprised to see them, for one thing, and for another, that they were headed towards me. Deer have always run in the opposite direction away from me.
They ran right in front of us, then dashed through the open gate into the pasture. Within seconds they were gone.
Sirocco got all excited and wanted to run after them. Too bad his harness restrained him and kept him from running away.
It was awesome to see them. They are beautiful creatures. The local community probably thinks of them in terms of how much meat is on them and how good they’d look, stuffed and mounted over the fireplace. I would kill a deer for food, but it’d have to be an emergency situation and the need for food dire.
Words fail me in being able to describe what a thrill it was to see them that close up. I regret that I couldn’t get a picture of them as they were running past.
I hope the Universe hands you surprises like this one, my Hordeling.
