A little gardening

  • by

Among other things today, I did a bit of gardening.

The wife bought a bunch of tulip bulbs, so today was the day to get them planted. The weather wasn’t too bad, around 45 deg F (7 deg C) and sunny, a little wind.

She had two type – Angeliques and Firetips. The Angeliques are a sort of pink tulip. The Firetips are red at the bottom and yellow at the top, a little more striking than the Angeliques.

I got the trowel then headed to the front flower bed. Each bulb has to be planted a little over five inches deep. The bulbs are roundish with a tip at the top. The tip has to be planted facing upward. I spaced them about four inches apart in two lines, the Angeliques in the back and the Firetips in the front. Watered them well after planting them.

She also got some Allium bulbs. I was unaware of his particular flower until the wife handed me the packet of bulbs. They aren’t tulips and are a blue-ish color. I had planned to plant them on either side of the front door, but it turned out the pest control folks put termite traps in the spots I planned to put the plants. I’ll have to figure out where we can put them later.

One other thing – something is breaking off branches on my apple trees. I’m going to guess it is a deer, as they are known to be in the area. I’ve been told it might be a bear but I don’t think so. I had some small tins from frozen chicken pot pies so I tied them to the branches so they’ll spin. I’m told this will help keep the deer away. Hopefully it will keep the bear away too.

I used to have a pretty good green thumb when I was a kid. Here’s hoping it is still there.
