The dogs let me sleep in until almost 7:00 AM. I wasn’t planning to walk them as it was still cold out, but once I opened the door to let them out in the backyard I found another reason to not walk them.
It snowed overnight.
We got about two inches of snow. The dogs went out in it and seemed to have a grand old time. They stayed out for a while as I got breakfast for the wife and I. The finally came back in after we had finished eating.
After getting the rest of my morning routine done I went out to get the car started, warmed up, and windows de-iced. The wife had an appointment with a pain management specialist this morning and I wanted to make sure I could see out the windows to drive. The wife has terrible back spasms that last for hours at a time. We were really hoping the pain management folks could do something to help her.
I got in the car, started the heater and waited a few minutes. Then I got out and scraped the ice off all the windows. I’ve had an ice scraper in my car for years but never really needed it in Texas. I’m very glad now that I have it.
It came time to get the wife to the car and this is where the trouble began. She also has mobility issues so getting her in and out of the house can be a challenge at times. There are four steps from the back porch to the driveway. Normally she can take them slowly and get to the car. This morning however they were covered in snow and ice.
I scraped off much of the snow with a shovel. I got some salt then spread it on the steps. That helped with the rest of the icing. I also shoveled a path to the car for her.
The wife came out and go to the top of the steps. She didn’t feel that she would be able to successfully navigate them. I can’t say that I blame her. She has fallen one or twice before on the steps. If she fell this time, I wouldn’t be able to get her up. She’d be stuck on the frozen ground waiting for me to either find one of our neighbors to help or for the Fire and Rescue to come for a lift assist. Either way, it would not be a good situation.
We went back inside and called the pain management clinic to tell them we wouldn’t be able to make the appointment. They were understanding and rescheduled it for next month. I’m just hoping that we aren’t facing a similar situation then.
