A trip to the ER for me

  • by

So, we went to our church’s Christmas meal yesterday afternoon. It was a catered affair and quite tasty. Much good food and some nice company.

Later in the evening, when we were back home, we had frozen chicken pot pies for dinner. As soon as I finished eating mine I felt like it hadn’t settled well.

Fast forward to this morning.

I woke up just before 6:00 AM feeling nauseous. Soon I was busy horking the chicken pot pie into the toilet. This turned out to be another one of those marathon sessions that just kept going. Twice I tried taking an Ondansetron but both times right after I took it I started heaving again.

It got to the point where the wife borrowed my phone and called for an ambulance. I got some clothes on while waiting for them to arrive.

The medics came and were quite efficient. Soon they had me up and walking to the ambulance. The only drawback was that it started snowing just before I woke up and it was still going on as we went to the hospital.

We got to the hospital and they gave me an anti-nausea drug. That helped immensely.

They took me down for a CT scan, which went smoothly.

Next they wanted to draw blood and put an I.V. into me because I was dehydrated. I explained to them why that was a Bad Idea(tm). Ultimately they ended up doing a blood draw and skipped the I.V. The nurse brought along a Sherriff’s Deputy who was working security in the hospital. He was good enough to keep hold of my opposite hand so it didn’t act independently and take a swing at the nurse drawing blood. We had a conversation (sort of) about recent superhero movies (Superman and Fantastic Four: First Steps) to keep me distracted. (They gave me a washcloth to bite down upon so I didn’t end up biting the nurse either). There was only one point when the blood draw got to be a little much for me but I had a tight grip on the Deputy’s hand so my hand didn’t get wild. I’m pleased to say none of the staff were injured in their attempt to get blood out of me.

I mostly slept the rest of the time I was in the ER. They came in and gave me a Zorfan tablet at one point. Also, they were nice enough to get me some ice chips to suck on to help with my dry mouth and get the taste of the anti-nausea drugs out. (Those things work well but taste nasty.)

After they got the CT scan results back the doctor came in to tell me that they think I have colitis and / or enteritis. They are putting me on Cipro and several other drugs to handle it.

The nursing staff released me. Unfortunately I didn’t have my phone because the wife borrowed it earlier in the morning to call the ambulance and didn’t return it to me. The nurse let me use the office phone to call the wife. She couldn’t drive because of the snow. She got in touch with one of the neighbors but his car was snowed in and he couldn’t get it out. She called the local Transportation Authority but they were closed for the day. Ultimately she got in touch with the Pastor of our church, who got in touch with one of the other members of the church who worked near by. He came to the ER after he got off work and was nice enough to drive me home.

After getting home I crashed for the rest of the afternoon until about 5:15 PM when the wife woke me up.

I’ve had fun before and that wasn’t it.

Here’s hoping all is well with you and your health, my Hordeling.
