It’s 6:15 PM. Do you know where your dinner is?

Inside the house, Major Tom called a meeting of the pack.

“Right. The sun is down. The Alphas haven’t retuned yet. Dinner should have been served over an hour ago.”

“What if something has happened to them? I’m hungry!” Sirocco sank to the floor.

“We’re all hungry,” Magdalena added, her security Gizmo chew toy nearby.

“I don’t think we should panic just yet.” Major Tom sat. “The Alphas have been late before. I’m sure they’ll be back soon.”

“I think we need to consider getting food on our own, in case they don’t make it back.” Magdalena stared at Sirocco. “I think we should eat the little one.”

“Me! Why not you? You’d keep us alive for a week or so.”

“We’re not eating anyone.” Major Tom stood. “And certainly no one is eating me.”

Magdalena sniffed Sirocco. “You’d only be two bites, at most, anyway.”

“If they don’t get here soon, I’m going to die of starvation.”

“Keep it together!” Major Tom stood menacingly over Sirocco. “They’ll be here. We’ll be fine.”

Sirocco put his head down. Magdalena picked up Gizmo in her mouth then walked into the living room.

A few minutes later the sound of a car pulling into the driveway brought the pack to full alert.

“Is it them? Are they here?” Sirocco ran to the door. Major Tom climbed the chair in the living room, the better to see out the living room window.

“It’s them! They’re back.” He too charged to the door. Magdalena was the last to come.

Car doors slammed and footsteps fell on the steps up to the porch. A key was inserted into the lock and the bolt clicked. The door pushed opened and the Alpha Male walked in.

“Feed me! Feed me!” Sirocco jumped up and down.

“Glad you’ve returned.” Major Tom jumped up and placed his feet on the Alpha Male. “We were getting concerned. As you see, the house is secure.”

Magdalena waved Gizmo at the Alpha Male.

“Hey, guys! And girl. Sorry, things took a little longer than I thought. Give me minute to get in and get settled and I’ll get your dinner. Now, anyone need to go outside to potty?”

Major Tom went out. “I need to check the perimeter anyway.”

Sirocco trailed the Alpha through the house, until they ended up in the kitchen. Major Tom came back in from outside along the way. Sirocco stared intently as the Alpha prepared their dinner bowls.

“All right, here we go. Major Tom.” The Alpha set down the first bowl.

“Sirocco.” He set down the second bowl.

“And Magdalena.” He set down the last bowl.

The dogs each went to their bowl, greedily wolfing down the food.

After they finished, Major Tom settled on the couch next to the Alpha Male. “I wasn’t concerned. I knew you’d show up and prepare the meals.”

Sirocco came over and flopped down at the Alpha’s feet. “I love you.” He then rolled over, exposing his belly. “I want pets.”

Magdalena caried Gizmo in and laid down at the center of the room with a contented sigh.

“Did you guys enjoy your dinner?” The Alpha reached down and scratched Sirocco. “I bet you did.”

All was right in the world again. Each dog drifted off to sleep, knowing the Alpha would always take care of them.
