The weather has turned nasty.
Yesterday, the temperatures plummeted and we got the first snow of the Winter Storm. It was only a few inches and nothing terribly overwhelming. But last night, we started getting ice / sleet coming down. It was odd because the ice made a crackling sound as it fell. I’d open the door to let the dogs go outside and hear “crackle crackle”. Not quite like Rice Krispies, but close.
Magdalena went out and did her business, leaving a large pile in the backyard. I figured it would make a good gauge to determine if there was more snow or not. If we could still see the pile, it hadn’t snowed enough. 🙂
Got up this morning and not much had changed. Still cold out, still white stuff all over the ground. Had breakfast (I made bacon and eggs for the wife, ad I had bacon and cereal) then went back to bed. Slept off and on for most of the morning.
Got up and got working on things. The winds started howling today so that was fun.
At one point the wife said she had a letter that had to be put in the mail for delivery. If the mail truck gets up our hill with all the ice and snow I’d be surprised. (Same with the garbage pickup tomorrow). I braved the elements and took her letter to the mailbox at the end of the driveway. Things went OK as I was by the house because we had some snow still on the ground. Then as I started on the driveway I ran into the ice. Much more difficult to walk on. I ended up falling twice. I banged my elbow the first time, and my hip the second time. Fortunately no signs of permanent injury so far. I was tempted to see if the wind would push me back toward the house but made my way carefully back.
We’ve been inside all day and it looks like we are going to be stuck inside a few more days. The temperatures aren’t forecasted to rise above 27 deg F (-2 deg C) for the next few days. Then on Friday more snow is expected. We could be stuck inside for a week or more. I’m fairly certain we have enough supplies to last that long but we might have to ration toward the end.
Later this afternoon we started getting more snow. (Magdalena’s pile has since disappeared). With the winds we’d get big clouds of snow blowing past the house. It’d be nice to burrow under some blankets and do nothing but read but I’ve got the things I need to be working on.
The wife had an appointment scheduled for tomorrow, but we got it changed to Thursday. There is no way we will get the wife out of the house and down the steps to get her to the appointment. Also, the road down our hill is covered with ice. I don’t know if things will be any better by Thursday. If not, we’ll have to reschedule again.
This is not unlike surviving a hurricane down South. At least we have power and food, and the house is still intact. These are all Good Things(tm).
Batten down the hatches, my Hordeling. It’s going to be a bumpy ride.
