Just when you thought it was safe to go outside ….

I am so ready for Winter to be over. I’m willing to skip Spring and go directly to Summer at this point. And I really like Spring.

The day started off nice enough. Not much wind, some sun, temperatures above freezing. After getting up and getting some domestic tasks out of the way, we headed out to run a few errands. We decided to eat out for lunch (mainly so we could be out of the house a little longer) before going to the grocery store to grab a few more supplies. One shouldn’t go to the grocery store when you’re hungry. You end up buying too much junk food that way.

We hit the grocery store. While we were in there, it returned. The snow. It seems that we get a day or two break and then the skies dump more of the white stuff all over us again. It’s just enough to make it difficult to get out of the house and around town, so we’ve mainly stayed inside and hibernated.

The locals keep telling me that Winter isn’t normally like this, that they don’t normally get this much snow. I guess the weather is just showing off for our benefit, seeing as this is the first time we’ve been this far North for the Winter. It is being extra Winter-y so we can get the full Winter experience. It really shouldn’t have gone to all the trouble on our account.

Along with all the snow we’ve got winds again. Today they’ve been between 25 – 35 miles per hour (40 – 56 kilometers per our) with gusts up to 55 – 60 miles per hour (88 – 96 kilometers per hour). 60 MPH is the bottom end of hurricane force winds. I’ve been through enough hurricanes in my life that I don’t feel the need to have to go though hurricane force winds again. Winds like that lead to 10-day long periods of no power, water, food or any of those other things that make daily life bearable.

We’ve been very fortunate in that we’ve kept power this whole time. It is a concern with the temperatures being so low. If we lose power we lose heat and that would be a Bad Ting(tm). Of course, a sensible solution would be to have a backup generator. At this point though, finding one has the same chances of getting a snow shovel or salt to melt the ice, that is to say the same as a snowball’s chance in Hell. Again, you need to prepare before you need it. Once the weather stops being so nasty we’ll look into getting a generator for the house.

On the whole, it seems that this is a freak occurrence. I’m just hoping it isn’t a recurring event. Less snow ad wind would be a Good Thing(tm) in my opinion.

I hope your weather, wherever you are, continues to be favorable, my Hordeling.
