The Muse is running off in another direction – again

So, my Muse is once again exhibiting her mental churn. She’s off and running with yet another idea for a series.

This time she’s going into vigilante fiction. Something sort of like a modern day Lone Ranger crossed with Paul Kersey (Charles Bronson’s character) in Death Wish.

My character is a guy who seems to have no set personality. He’s a social chameleon, able to insert himself into any culture or setting. He’s always trying to do the right thing, but the world is tricky. It always finds a way to fill whatever gap he creates by taking out the bad guys. Power abhors a vacuum. He navigates his way through the seedy underworld, making alliances that he may very well burn down later as part of his campaign to clear out all the corruption in the city. He deals with gangsters, political corruption, amoral citizens. He plays different factions off against each other, probably having a role in several factions, the better to manipulate things to his advantage.

I imagine a large sprawling coastal city, where the rich live high on the hog and are just as corrupt as the lower classes. Maybe even more so. Fast cars, nice clothes, luxury yachts. It occurs to me that my Muse might be heavily influenced by Miami Vice.

I’m not sure where this is coming from. The Muse just started throwing ideas for this at me. It’s sort of adjacent to the various ideas I have for mystery stories, but those are more of your standard whodunit type stories. This is more the vigilante revenge type scenarios.

In order to not piss off my Muse and hurt her feelings, I’ve made notes on these stories. I’m setting them aside for now and trying to guide her back to the supernatural soap opera. I’m still working on it, but apparently not fast enough for my Muse. I suppose she’s bored working on the background and world building. I think she wants to get to the writing. She’s probably right on that point. I’m probably procrastinating, trying to get everything perfect before launching. Of course waiting until it is all perfect means I’ll be waiting forever. I need to get moving forward on the writing, and try not to write myself into a corner.

    1. Yes, but they all had compunctions against killing anyone. The guy I envision is more like The Punisher, The Executioner, or The Destroyer. Willing to take a life if needed, and not afraid to get his hands dirty. Much like Paul Kersey in Death Wish.
