Happy National Napping Day!

  • by

Today, here in the States at any rate, is a holiday near and dear to my heart. Happy National Napping Day!

Yes, the day when taking a nap is not only okay but actually encouraged. There are even some enlightened businesses that allow their employees to take a nap during the day. Some of them even let their employees do it all the time. Sadly, none of the businesses I worked for, up until the time I started working for myself, would adopt this wonderful holiday for just one day. Not for my lack of trying. Alas, my cries fell upon deaf ears and none of them adopted the practice.

The day is celebrated on the second Monday in March, which happens to be after the second Sunday, which is the day we move our clocks forward an hour for Daylight Savings Time. There has been much debate on whether Daylight Savings Time is a worthwhile endeavor and whether it should be banned. I don’t have any strong feelings on it one way or the other. It is a minor annoyance having to move all the clocks forward an hour. If I didn’t have to do it that wouldn’t bother me either. Either way, as long as we can keep celebrating National Napping Day, I’m happy.

Now, I’m not saying that napping should only happen on a given day each year. I’m generally a fan of napping, even if I don’t get to do it as often or as long as I would like. But it is nice to have a day that brings it to the attention of all those who don’t appreciate the wonders that are naps. Like workaholics. It might encourage them to do more napping. Maybe people would be less cranky if they could get a good nap in during the day.

Getting good naps can be a bit of a challenge in my house. There are times when the wife will get a jumpstart on napping. She’ll be asleep when I’m having to finish off some task or another. I’ll finally get to bed and just about the time I get to sleep, the wife will wake up and yell something like “Are you coming in to take a nap?” At which point I’ll roll over and say “yes”. All she has to do is look over to the other side of the bed to see I’m there, but she has yet to do that.

If it isn’t the wife waking me up, I have to make sure the bedroom door is closed. If I don’t close it, one, if not all, of the dogs will come in. They will come over to my side of the bed and stick their noses in my face, as if to say “whatcha doing, Dad?” I’ll usually say something like “go away, I’m trying to nap”. At which point they will start pawing at me because they want pets. At least with Sirocco I can give him a few pets until he slides to the floor. Then he rolls over for a belly rub. I can give him a few rubs then he’s set. He won’t bother me anymore and I can finish my nap. The other two are more insistent and just want non-stop pets. There’s no getting back to sleep with them in the room.

So, I’m sure you’re wondering, did I actually get a nap this afternoon? Yes, but it took a while and it was only for 15 minutes. There is something going on that I don’t want to discuss just yet. Nothing nefarious but it’s one of those things that I feel that if I talk about it I’m likely to jinx it. I had gone in to lay down to get a nap but the phone kept ringing. These were calls we had to take because of what is going on. In between them it seems like every spammer in existence was also calling me all afternoon. Then the wife was so stressed over what was going on I had to take some time to get her calmed down and relaxed. Then I finally got my nap but a much shorter one than I wanted. Hey, I’ll take any nap I can get away with.

I hope you got to take advantage of National Napping Day, my Hordeling.
