Another gathering of miscellaneous things

  • by

Just some random things running through my brain tonight –

Sirocco seems out of sorts recently. Yesterday morning he threw up in the house. It looks like he was eating grass to bring it on, given the contents of what came up. It also had a pinkish hue to it, so I’m wondering if he ate something that he shouldn’t have and if his stomach or other internal organ may be bleeding. He’s been moping around this evening even though he was his usual chipper self earlier in the day. Maybe he’s just upset because Magdalena continues to divide the house in two by laying across the threshold that separates the two halves of the house. Or it could be because she is jealously guarding her food and whining if one of the other dogs comes anywhere near. I thought if she’d just eat the food it wouldn’t be a problem, but she is doing the same thing (still) if she eats all the food.

I made a survey of all our new trees around the house again. I’m happy to report that the Golden Delicious apple tree has plenty of leaves on it. The Honeycrisp apple tree has finally gotten leaf buds and a few leaves on it. I thought it was possibly dead, which would have been disappointing since I got it as a companion tree to the Golden Delicious tree. Still a few years away from them producing fruit but they are growing.

All the maple trees are getting leaves except for one that I thought was getting buds the last time I checked. It still hasn’t gotten any leaves on it and I’m left wondering if it is a late bloomer or if it might be dead? We got some nice rain today so maybe that will help. Also, since these are maple trees, I wonder if they are the right type to get maple syrup from them?

The wife got a few rhododendrons and forsythia bushes to go along the edge of the property next to the street. It seems one of the neighbors backed their car up on our property when they were trying to turn around in the street. The bushes will line that part of the property to hopefully prevent such a thing from happening again.

We finished watching Sweet Tooth on Netflix. It was a good series. I’d say it almost fits the genre of cozy fantasy as the story centers around Gus, a human-deer hybrid. He’s likeable and good-natured, even though there’s a whole lot of nastiness going on around him. At the same time the human-animal hybrids show up, a plague is wiping out the human race. As the human civilization collapses, Gus and his found family must journey to try to find a cure for the plague. Much of the horrible things that happen are (mostly) off screen. It was based on a series of comic books published by DC. I don’t know how faithful they were to the original source material, not having read them, but the story they tell in the series is a good one. It is filled with interesting characters. Christian Convery does an excellent job as Gus. I expect he will have a good career ahead of him. James Brolin does a great job as the Narrator. The rest of the cast, played by some not-so-well-known actors, all turn in fine performances. I recommend watching this one.

All last night, the wife’s continuous glucose monitor was going off. Every hour it would beep an alert at us (sometimes every half hour). It made sleep a fleeting experience. I’ve heard of polyphasic sleep but I don’t think the cycles are supposed to be this short. First her blood sugar was too high, then too low. We have entered in some more calibrations based on her testing her blood sugar the old-fashioned way. Either we are doing something wrong, or the device is doing something wrong, or the educator didn’t give us all the facts. As it stands now, the wife is ready to rip the thing off her arm, throw it on the ground, run it over with a steamroller, and never deal with it again. We have a appointment with her doctor tomorrow so we’ll see how this develops.

I hope all is well within your world, my Hordeling.
