A while back I talked about having a cleaning lady come in and help us get the house in order. She’s been back several times since and is doing an utterly fantastic job helping us get things organized.
Last week she got the bedroom closet straightened and organized. We can walk on the floor and get to the washer and dryer and everything. All is in it’s place.
Now, let’s talk about space allocation briefly. Nearly ninety-nine percent of the closet is filled with the wife’s clothing and shtuff. There is about one foot of space where I hang up my clothes. Fortunately I don’t have a lot of things that really need to be hung up. I live mostly out of the dresser where my clothes are stored.
So, the wife and I were in the bedroom, working on one of her books on her computer. That’s when it happened.
There was a mighty crash … in the closet.
I got up to go take a look.
The shelves on one wall of the closet broke away from the wall. They cascaded down (three levels of shelves) so all the clothes and other things (we had some pillows stored on the very top shelf) were now in a big heap on the floor. Including my clothes.
Great.
I took some photos and texted them to a friend of mine who used to build houses, so I trust he knows what he is doing, for an opinion. I figured we were going to have to scrap the entire set of shelving then replace them.
He texted back a few minutes later, saying that he has the same type of shelving and the whole thing was salvageable. What he does is uses wires running from the front edge of the shelf to the ceiling joists to help support the weight.
Being the very helpful soul that he is, he will be coming over to help me get this situation corrected.
I have suggested to the wife that maybe she should cull some of the clothing she hasn’t worn in a while, thus having less weight on the shelves. If she hasn’t worn it since we got married, she probably isn’t going to wear it again.
The wife has not agreed or disagreed to this proposal but I get the feeling she is not happy about it. We shall see.
