Dialing in blood sugars on devices

  • by

Well, we’re having fewer problems with the wife’s CGM and insulin pump.

We had one of the Continuous Glucose Monitor devices go bad. We had to remove it from her. In a probably not so wise move, we waited a day and a half for the current insulin pump to expire so we could put new ones of both devices on her at the same time.

The CGM is supposed to be learning her blood sugar patterns. We had to calibrate this sensor with readings om her old glucose meter. This is the second sensor we’ve done that with. You shouldn’t have to keep calibrating them, but we are still in the initial two week period. One we get past that, the device should be self-correcting. I’m assuming some minor adjustments will be necessary.

Both the doctor and other people I know who use the CGM / insulin pump combo say that one it gets dialed in and knows what her blood sugar levels are like, this will make her life so much easier. I’m hoping that is the case. At least it hasn’t been going off all night long with dire warnings that her blood sugar is too low any more.

The only other problem is that we have use my phone to run the app for the sensor. Since the phone has to be within twenty (20) feet of the wife at all times, that means I can’t carry it around with me. I’m missing calls and texts because the app puts my phone in permanent ‘do not disturb’ mode. We started looking for an older smartphone on eBay so we could load the app on that and I could get my phone back. We also checked for refurbished monitor units.

We called the manufacturer to ask a few questions about doing this. The nice tech told us tat it is possible to get the doctor who prescribed the sensor to put i a prescription for the monitor device. Would have bee nice if they’d told us that to begin with. The wife called the doctor’s office and put in a request. Haven’t heard back from them yet about when we might get it.

Here’s hoping it arrives soon.
