Bacon + Leek White Pizza and The Ruby Key

Stepping away from the religious topics, and on to other things.

So, we were at the grocery store the other day and the wife bought leeks (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leek). Unless it has been part of something I’ve eaten at a restaurant, I’m fairly certain I’ve never eaten leeks before. I can definitely say I’ve never cooked anything with leeks before.

The wife wanted to use them in a dish, so I told her to find a recipe I could follow. She went searching and came upon something that I would consider perfect for an episode of Will Jim Eat It? Bacon + Leek White Pizza. Should you want to try this culinary curiosity, you can find the recipe here:

Bacon, good. Pizza, good. Leeks? And heavy cream instead of marinara? Dubious, at best. In my way of thinking, it sounded like a waste of a perfectly good pizza and bacon. But I said I’d give it a try, so I set about cooking it.

It was fairly straightforward to prepare. I got a pizza shell (do pizza shells come from pizza turtles?) so I didn’t have to mess with that. The recipe says to bake it in the oven at 500 deg F (260 deg C), but our oven would only go up to 475 F (246 C). I washed and cut up the leeks, then half-cooked the bacon. The recipe said the bacon would finish cooking in the oven. I spread the bacon grease over the pizza shell, put a thin layer of pesto over it, put the leeks on the crust, topped that with the bacon, then cheese, then finally drizzled two tablespoons of heavy cream over everything. Popped the whole thing in the oven to bake for ten (10) minutes. Pulled it out when it finished, drizzled two more tablespoons of heavy cream on it, then let it sit for a few minutes.

While the pizza was cooking I checked my email. Sitting there in my inbox was a notification that the Ruby Key Kickstarter concluded and the book successfully funded! Caliwandalous! Congratulations to Cat for a successful campaign. I hope the campaign for the second book does as well. I’ll be sure to announce it when it launches.

Sliced the pizza up into eight slices, then served it to the wife. The moment of truth was upon me. I had to take a bite of this unconventional pizza. I hoped it wouldn’t suck.

I took a bite.

At this point you’d probably be expecting me to say I absolutely loved it. Well, I can’t. I didn’t hate it. It was just kind of ‘meh’. I finished off my half of he pizza because I was hungry. I mean, if it were the only thing available I’d eat it again, but it certainly isn’t my go-to choice when it comes to pizza. I much prefer my traditional pizza with marinara sauce and black olives and / or mushrooms. If I’m really feeling wild I might get a Hawaiian pizza – pineapple and Canadian bacon.

The only other drawback is we still have some leeks left, and another pizza shell, along with all of the other ingredients to make it again. I’m willing to eat this, but not quite so soon. Maybe we can find a different recipe to use up the rest of the leeks.

I hope all your culinary adventures are more palatable, my Hordeling.

    1. Yeah. I agree, but other folks might have a better appreciation for the dish than I do. People like and eat all sorts of things on this planet, a very large number of which I’m fairly certain I wouldn’t like.
