An appreciation for the finer things in life

  • by

Warning! OK, this one is religious-adjacent, but not overly so. If you want to skip it I’ll see you tomorrow.

I came across this quote by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, which reads:

“A man should hear a little music, read a little poetry, and see a fine picture every day of his life, in order that worldly cares may not obliterate the sense of the beautiful which God has implanted in the human soul.”

Personally, I think this would be a much better thing to teach to the masses than all the hoops that religion tries to make us jump through.

This is what we live for. If there is nothing worthwhile in the world to appreciate, then it isn’t much of a world to live in. If everyone focused more on these three actions, daily, then the world might be a little less screwed up than it is. Instead of being all hyper-focused on trying to obtain some impossible standard of behavior that may or may not have anything to do with an eternal afterlife, I’d think that just doing what Goethe advises would lead to less stress and more appreciation of every day things. That in turn might get people closer to that impossible behavioral standard.

So, with that in mind, let me suggest some materials for your enlightenment.

Here’s a little music for you for today. Webb Wilder’s The Rest (Will Take Care Of Itself)

For your poetry selection of the day, Lewis Carroll’s The Jabberwocky

Finally, for your bit of art for today, Gary Larson’s take on a famous Da Vinci painting –

I hope these bits have enriched your life, my Hordeling. There is so much more out there in the world. I encourage you to explore a little bit of it every day and see if the world doesn’t get a little better.
