It’s just a drive to see the rhododendrons ….

  • by

“Let’s take a drive and see if the rhododendrons are in bloom.”

We had some really nice weather today – sunny, warm, light breeze. I took advantage of the conditions and was in the middle of planting marigold seeds in several hanging baskets. I also planted them along the front edge of the flower bed in front of the house. I just hope the local groundhog doesn’t eat all the ones in the flower bed. Marigolds are a delicacy for them.

“Sure. Let me finish up here and we can go.”

I finished with the seeding, then poured some water on them to get them to start germinating and be better embedded in the soil. I went inside, washed up and I was ready to go.

We piled into the car and were off. There are plenty of rhododendrons along the back roads and when they finally bloom they look extremely beautiful.

Just after we got started, the wife’s Continuous Glucose Meter alarm went off. Her blood sugar was getting low. I pulled into a convenience store and got her a snack to help brig her blood sugar up. I made small talk with the guy at the checkout counter and told him we were headed out to see the rhododendrons. He said he didn’t think we’d had enough rain for them to be in bloom yet, but he hoped we found a few.

Then we were back on the road. The back roads are pretty curvy, so it helps to take them a little slower than the posted speed limit. No real problem on a beautiful day like today.

We did see lots of the plants along the drive, but regrettably none of them were in bloom yet.

We were near the next town. It turns out the wife hadn’t had lunch yet, which explains her blood sugar going low. We stopped off to eat.

Once we got out of the restaurant and back in the car I turned to the wife and said “So, we’re heading home now?”

“No. There’s a little antique shop I want to go to.”

“Ah, that was you’re cunning plan all along, wasn’t it? To go shopping!”

“Nothing gets past you, husband.”

“Uhhh … yeah. Right. And don’t you forget it.”

It turned out to be a good trip though. We found a bowl of Scrabble tiles in one of the smaller booths. We are missing one of the blank tiles and the dogs chewed up a “U”. We found both of them and bought them.

I hope your significant other is more forthcoming with their plans, my Hordeling.
