Seeing things a little differently

  • by

No, I have not had some earth-shattering mystical revelation that will usher in a new age of peace and prosperity for all. Darn the luck!

Instead, the wife and I had eye exams this afternoon. It’s been several years since I last had one so it is probably about time I did it again.

The nurse did all the preliminary items. They no longer blow a blast of air at your eye to test for whatever it is that tests. This time she stuck something very close to my eye that made me blink a lot. I gather it would have gone faster if I wasn’t blinking so much. I passed.

Then we go to reading all the lines of text on the wall. The text keeps getting smaller and smaller until it is at the point you can’t read it any more. It seems I did better with the left eye than the right eye. Then we did the same thing while looking through lenses and answering “Which looks better? One? (lens change) Or two?” We ended with me covering one eye ad the nurse holding up varying amounts of fingers off to the side of my face to test my peripheral vision. (I did great).

The upshot of all that is my prescription has changed a little since the last time I had all this done. I should probably get a new pair of glasses but I’ll hold off for now as the current ones are performing well enough.

Then we got to something new and fun – pupil dilation. I’ve never had my pupils dilated before. I kid you not. The nurse put numbing drops in my eyes first, then the drops for dilation. Again, it seems I blinked every time she tried getting the drops in my eyes, but it eventually worked out. After that I got to sit and wait for the doctor to come in. It felt like my eyelashes were sticking together even though that wasn’t the case.

The doctor made it in and spent some time staring into my eyes through her machine. According to her, my eyes are in pretty good shape, especially for a diabetic. The wife had her eyes examined after me, and hers are doing fairly good too.

We checked out and paid for the appointment. They gave us these paper thin ‘sunglasses’ to wear outside and while driving. I tried them on inside and everything went pitch black. My vision was a little blurry and the bright lights weren’t doing me any favors. Sunlight certainly didn’t help. We got in the car and I have to say the ‘sunglasses’ didn’t really help much there either. I couldn’t see the dashboard so I had no idea of how fast I was going. I stayed behind the car in front of me but if they were speeding I couldn’t tell you. Traffic lights were a challenge too. I took them off and just dealt with the brightness so I could make it home.

At least I don’t have to do this again for another year. In the meantime, I remain fairly indestructible.
