What the Martian Chronicles taught me

Next up, the television adaption of The Martian Chronicles by Ray Bradbury (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0080242/). People make life so complicated when it is really very simple.

  1. I have mixed feelings about this. I always enjoyed the selection from the tv movie, and I enjoyed much more the episode in the book it was based on. But the first bit always soured me a little.

From the first time I read it, I’ve always thought how ridiculous it was for 2 people to argue about which of them was alive and which was a ghost. After all, “alive” and “ghost” are both artificial constructs. For all we know, once our delusions are finally stripped away from us, the concepts of “alive” and “ghost” both might well be meaningless gibberish.

And then I wonder about why Bradbury found it necessary to spend so much time explaining the obvious to simpletons.

And then I think about how many times I’ve had to have the obvious explained to me, and I am grateful for people like Bradbury.
