“I want to take you somewhere….”

Way back when, not long after I’d met the wife and started developing a friendship, she surprised me one day.

“I want to take you somewhere, for something. It’s in one of the worst parts of town, where there are a lot of gender-confused people.”

Gee, with an invitation like that, how could I refuse?

“I don’t think so.”

To my mind, this is not the way you invite someone to go somewhere with you.

“It’ll be fun. You’ll enjoy it.”

“How can you possibly think that going to the worst part of town with ‘gender-confused people’ is going to be fun?”

“Okay, forget all that. It’s for a play I want you to see.”

All right, that’s more like it. I enjoy a good play. I was still dubious, but acquiesced to her request.

It turned out to be a production of Godspell. A rather good production put on by a small acting troupe in a community theatre. I’m glad I took her up on the invitation.

Of course, there was also the first time she asked me to join her for an activity. She invited me to go with her to a gun range to practice shooting. We were driving to the place and she turns to me and says “It’s between a Church and a hotel.” I cannot lie, thoughts of shotgun weddings floated through my mind.

Upon reflection, these two events should have clued me in as to what was to come from our friendship – lots of crazy “I Love Lucy antics.

Love you, Wife.
