Sorry about the radio silence yesterday, my Hordeling. We got involved with watering the plants and trees and working on the filing cabinet of Dooooom! When it came time to make a post, I was too worn out. Mea culpa.
Speaking of watering, plants and trees – the trees we planted last fall are doing well. They all survived the winter, then budded this spring and put out leaves.
The only one not doing well is my Golden Delicious apple tree. Up until a month or so ago it seemed to be doing fine, but since then many of the leaves have turned brown. There are still some green leaves near the top but overall the tree does not look like it is doing well. The Honey Crisp tree we companion-planted nearby is doing fine.
I’ve been running the sprinkler every other day or so, letting it run for ten minutes at a time in each area I’m watering. These directions came from the landscaper who planted them for us. We got in touch with her again today and she said the sprinkler is probably what is killing the tree. It seems that the tree isn’t getting enough water to sustain itself. Also with the temperatures goin up during the summer the environment is drier so more of the water is going into the dirt or evaporating.
So, now she has instructed me to let the hose run directly on each plant for five minutes, so they get a lot more water. Tomorrow is the next watering day so I’ll start this new regimen then. Hopefully the apple tree isn’t so far gone that it can’t recover.
This is really going to raise our water bill. But if I can save the tree and get apples in a few years it will be worth it.
