I got up his morning, and as part of my usual morning rituals, I booted up my computer. I then went about getting breakfast for the wife and myself.
I finally sat down at the computer, moved the mouse to wake it up, and saw something I wasn’t expecting.
“Let’s set up your computer” in nice big friendly letters.
What the flutz?
I seems that overnight, somehow, Microsoft did some kind of update, or at least that’s my theory. It reset my computer back to a mostly default state. All my desktop links to my apps are gone. My browser histories are gone. The few saved passwords I had are gone. Things like my ‘recent documents’ in LibreOffice, gone.
I’m not exactly sure what happened. It looks like all my files are on the hard drive. All my files on my external drive seem to be intact. Both are backed up offsite so I’m not too worried about that.
The day was filled with cleaning up the files in the F.C.O.D., watering the plants, and doctor appointments for the wife. This evening I went through and started setting up the computer the way I like it again.
I looked up steps to take when this happens but much of what I found were for Windows Vista and earlier. It sees that you could restore your PC to a setpoint, sot of like being able to restore a video game to the last successful point you played. There is a Rest This PC function in Windows 10 / 11 but this seems to reset the PC back to the original settings. I don’t need that! That already happened. Hmmm. I wonder if this is the result of a malicious virus or trojan horse running on my PC. I’ll have to look into that.
In the meantime, I’m recovering from this setback. I should have everything back to the way I want it tomorrow. It’s interesting that I consider this a setback. Something like this really makes you realize how much of our lives is tied up with computers. Well, at least mine is anyway.
