My Muse is percolating new ideas again. This time, she’s into mysteries.
This is good for Arthur Mace fans, as I feel his exploits fall under the Mystery category. She’s trying to figure out his next case. And two more after that. Then, the biggie – what happened to Lenore, the love of Arthur’s life? And why does he feel responsible?
In addition to that, a number of years ago I wrote an ongoing serialized story on the Holly’s Writing Classes forums about a private detective getting wrapped up in a strange adultery case. I never named him and he eventually got named The Hat by the other members of the forums. I came up with about twenty (20) story ideas for the character. They are all likely to be short stories and released in collections. The Muse has been digging into them and putting things together.
Then there’s Simon Starburst. He would be the science fictional equivalent of Arthur Mace. Soon after I had the idea for Arthur and his adventures in the Kingdom, Simon showed up. He operates out of a space station orbiting a gas giant. Whereas Arthur is cranky and curmudgeonly, Simon is more sociable and a lovable rogue. Instead of Kings and Dragons, Simon will deal with Aliens and Mechas.
Finally, the wife wrote a sort of humorous horror detective story about a private investigator who’s a galactic bounty hunter and part-time ghostbuster. Since she read it to me, my Muse has been trying to come up with other stories around the character. If I come up with one the wife likes, we may try collaborating on the story. Maybe I could even do a crossover with Simon Starburst.
With all that going on, I’m still tying to get the supernatural soap opera written too. Getting my Muse to stick with one storyline is worse than trying to herd cats. She wants to WRITE ALL THE STORIES! I’m trying to accommodate her whims but I’m also trying to get her to finish a project before running off after other shiny objects. I realize I’ll probably not get to write all the stories the Muse wants to do, even if I could write fourteen thousand (14,000) words a day like Frederick Faust used to do. But I’m going to try to get as many out as I can.
