This past weekend was the 4th of July holiday, or Independence Day, here in the States. We didn’t do a lot during the day and ended the day watching the big fireworks show the town puts on. I didn’t see as many fireflies as in years past, but I still enjoyed the display. It’s cool seeing fireflies blinking in the foreground and fireworks exploding in the background. The dogs even managed to survive.
We did hear from my step-daughter, though. Her 4th of July celebration was decidedly different from ours.
It seems she was in her garden when she came across a western diamondback rattlesnake. Since she used to work in a recreational park, she’s used to coming across venomous snakes. Yes, rattlesnakes, those villains in so many Western movies, are indeed venomous and can kill you. She managed to decapitate the creature with a hoe.
Instead of disposing of the body, she took it to her kitchen and went all Die Hard on it. She skinned it, cooked it and ate it. She sent us pictures. She even sent a video of the snake still squirming after she had skinned it. It seems that, much like chickens, they can keep moving after they die. They can even inject venom into you so make sure that if you kill one, behead it. I for one did not know they kept moving after death. It was morbidly fascinating to watch the video of the body still squirming around. She even pointed out the heart inside the body.
She told me that she took the cooked snake to a party and offered it around. I don’t think she had too many takers. Also, much like eating fish, you have to watch out for the many small bones when eating snake. They are hard to debone. Fortunately the step-daughter didn’t get any bones in the bits she ate.
I’ve never eaten snake but I’m told it is quite tasty. Many folks fall back on the old saying “it tastes like chicken!”, unless they are from Louisiana or Florida, then they say “it tastes like gator!”
I’m not sure I’m fast enough to kill a snake, nor do I have the outdoor skills to skin or cook it, but if someone else can do those things, I’m at least willing to give it a try.
