This morning the wife wanted to go to the pool to get some exercise. I had already walked the dogs so I figured I had my exercise for the day. Still, the pool isn’t a bad way to spend some time.
We got our stuff together and went to the pool. I got twelve laps in, with one lap being from one end of the pool to the other and back. I try to do the last two laps as quickly as possible to push myself. It is supposed to be more aerobic or something.
After I finished my laps I went over to spot the wife as she did her exercises.
The pool is indoors, but the walls around it have plenty of windows to see outside and let sunlight in. Outside there is a small driveway going around the building, part of the parking lot, a guard rail, and lots of woods. We sometimes get visitors outside. One morning we saw a fox.
This morning I happened to look out the window and saw a fawn on the other side of the guard rail. It was still young enough to have its spots. It went off and around the corner of the building, where I saw it appear on the other side. But then I noticed another deer head next to it. There were two fawns!
One of them wandered off and out of sight but the other stayed a while. It was kinda funny. The fawn would bend down behind the guard rail to nibble on something, then pop up and look at the glass windows. I don’t know if it could see us on the other side of the glass or not. It kept lookin up like it was trying to see if we were watching, or perhaps if something else might be watching. I suppose that kind of behavior is what keeps it alive in the wilderness.
The fawn eventually had its fill of grass and leaves and followed its sibling down the hill and out of sight. It would have been great to have a camera so I could have gotten a picture or three.
I’m always thankful for encounters like that. I like seeing wild creatures up close in their natural habitats. Not that a parking lot and guard rail are the deer’s natural habitat, but you know what I mean.
