WordPress is great, until its not

  • by

The other day I saw that there was a new version of WordPress available. Hosting companies like it when you stay up-to-date on the software you use that runs on their servers. It makes things easier on them to keep things patched and running smoothly. Helping the folks that run the servers have an easier time is a courtesy I can extend them, especially as my hosting company, TigerTech, has some of the best, top-notch tech support you will find anywhere.

So, I went ahead and updated my WordPress installation. Everything seemed to have run fine and I got a message saying it had successfully installed. Woohoo!

I did a quick check of my site. Everything looked to be in order. The pages were loading just fine, no bugs that I could see.

Then last night I went to make a post on the blog to go with the corresponding email. Still, everything in the admin area looked good. I cleared out all the spam comments then went to make my post.

This is where things went wonky (that’s a precise, scientific term). I could load the page to enter a new blog post, yet the screen was blank. I didn’t have the form to edit or enter a post. I even tried running my mouse over the page and highlighting it to see if they ended up putting white text on a white background. That wasn’t the case. Well, that sucks.

I tried going to older posts to see if I could edit one but still got a blank screen.

I’ve checked the WordPress theme to see if it might need updating too. Doesn’t look like there is an update for it yet. The plug-ins are all up-to-date as well.

At this point, I’m hoping this will either resolve itself, or maybe WordPress will put out another update that will correct this, or I might have to contact tech support and see if they an help me with the problem. Yes, they are top-notch but I don’t want to bother them with problems resulting from other people’s software. They have plenty of things to take care of without something piddly like this to do, too.

In the meantime, you will still be able to avail yourself of my wisdom and silly stories if you’re subscribed to my email list, my Hordeling.

Onwards!
