Again with the mailbox

  • by

So, we had to run errands early in the day but around 3:00 PM we were back home. I took the opportunity to tackle changing the mailbox, especially as rain is predicted for much of the weekend.

I dug the new post up, which turned out much easier than the first time as I didn’t use concrete to keep it in place. I have a bag of Quickcrete (the thing is darn heavy!) but didn’t want to go to the trouble of using it. Turns out to have been a good call.

I measured out how far up the new post had to be placed. Fortunately a neighbor had a post hole digger, which they were kind enough to let me borrow. It was still a lot of work but it did make things go easier.

I got the hole almost deep enough to put the post in when I hit a rock. I just couldn’t get past the thing. I got a small trowel and tried to dig to find the edges but with no luck. Fortunately our lawn guy was working on the yard and was able to help me get past the rock. That made finishing digging the hole a lot easier.

He convinced me that using the Quickcrete would be a better way to secure the post so I went to get the bag out of the garage. I picked up the bag and was trying to get it past the new bookshelves we bought that were sitting there when the bag split. About half of it fell on the bookshelves and floor. Aaarrgh! What a mess.

< heavy sigh >

We got the Quickcrete around the mailbox post so I’m hopeful that the new placement is to the liking of our mail carrier. If I have to move it again, it’s going to be troublesome. At least the concrete will help keep the mailbox in place when the winds start howling.

I went to clean up the garage. For the record, Quickcrete does not like being swept up. Every time I moved the broom back to make a another sweep, lines of the mix tailed across the floor. I did manage to get most of it up. I also had to do a very thorough wiping of the bookshelves. It took a while but I’m hoping that any particles left don’t solidify into concrete bits and ruin the shelves.

Hopefully this is the last time I have to post about the mailbox, my Hordeling.
